Hasell family papers, 1803-1884.

Papers consist of medical accounts, a medical daybook, medical lecture notes, plantation papers, and other items. Included are the papers of Lewis Cruger Hasell (1830-1889), George P.B. Hasell (1781-1818), and Andrew Hasell (1803-1866). Papers (1803-1816) of George P.B. Hasell consist of a medical account book (1812-1816) for patients, mostly Georgetown County plantation families and slaves; and five notebooks (1803-1804) containing lecture notes on subjects such as midwifery and the diseases of women and children, with notes on lectures by Dr. Alexander Monro of Edinburgh University. Family names mentioned in the account book include Harleston, Quash, Shubrick, and Ball. Also included is a copy of "Medico-Chirurgical Transactions" (London, 1812), with an annotated index. Papers of Andrew Hasell (1803-1866) consist of two account books (1830-1856) recording Dr. Hasell's treatments, prescriptions, and charges for many Georgetown County plantation families and their slaves; and a medical daybook (1841-1850) noting patients' illnesses and charges. Families mentioned include Alston, Allston, Belin, Middleton, Carson, Ward, Weston, and others.
